Half-Priced Wine Night

Ah what a wonderful concept.  Restaurants all over the US (World?) have been using the draw of a half-priced bottle of wine to lure customers in on “off” nights for some time now it seems.  Some also use the dinner for two and bottle of wine for XX dollars as well.  Either way, it keeps people happy and half-lit for low cost.

Just don’t stop to think about it is all.  The reason for this is because if you do think about it, the only realization you will come to is that you are getting hosed every other night of the week.  This should come as no surprise to most of us.  You’re paying at minimum 100% markup on most bottles of wine.  So even at half price they are probably making a buck or two on you and they got you in there to eat.  In the end, it’s not awful.  Most of as happily, or some times begrudgingly, pay these premiums for the joy that comes with a nice meal and a bottle of wine shared amongst friends.

With that I’ll share my favorites in Raleigh.  For a general kick back good time and CHEAP eats head to Helios on Tuesday nights.  I went last week with a few friends and it was a great time to sit back and relax, share a few stories, and a bottle of wine.  Another favorite is at Duck and Dumpling.  Be prepared to drop some coin on this but the food is AWESOME and they have an excellent wine list to choose from.

Century Mark. Breakdown. Tweetup

For those of you not involved with twitter this post will likely be as meaningless of most of the posts that I have made lately.  Twitter is topical for me at the moment and thus brings thoughts and words to mind.

Today I passed 100 followers and am therefore following nearly 100 people as well.  I took a look at my twitterholic and in the past 40 days or so I’ve gone from 15 tweeple and about 200 updates to 100 tweeple and 750 updates.  In the grand scheme of things this is pretty minimal in the twitter world.  That said, for me it’s been a continuous stream of change in how I react to twitter. @dtraleigh said it best today with:

Twitter is now like trying to talk to your friends at the loudest club and the 10 foot loudspeaker is next to your head.

Net result, it’s nearly impossible to keep track of what is going on with everyone on twitter.  I’ve been reduced to just taking a glance occasionally and checking replies to me.  There really isn’t any other way to keep track of the whole thing.  I dread the day that I might have one thousand people to follow or vice-versa.  Total overload.

The other big “news” at twitter this week was that it’s been dying a slow death on an almost daily basis.  I got a total kick out of this video blog post from Loren Feldman of 1938 media. The quickie summary is that basically most people on twitter are bored proffesionals starved for attention and blog hits.  This is why we tolerate this mess.

The most interesting thing to happen in the twitterverse, at least locally, is triangletweetup.  This will be my first tweetup of any significant numbers.  Definitely looking forward to the presentations and activities.  Since twitter is more social than network for me, the best part will just be to put names and faces with twitternames.  Should be good times to be had by all.
