This Friday evening, August 6th, at First Friday in Raleigh will be the opening for Series 1 of the Portraits of Raleigh exhibit at the Raleigh City Museum. I’ve been privileged enough to be selected for the exhibition. The opening reception will be from 6pm-9pm and will be on display until November 27th, 2010. There will be a “Sir Walter Award” given to the photograph selected as favorite by the reception attendees. So please stop by and vote!

In addition to my piece some good friends of mine have also been selected. Look for pieces from James Gries and Abby Nardo as well.

Raleigh Time Lapse

I recently got the bug to try and do some time lapse photography when I saw this post over at Digital Photography School.  It’s a good intro to what you are getting into and links to various attempts around the web.  I had considered doing this previously but never really got around to it.  This work by Ross Ching is pretty much the ULTIMATE time lapse I have seen out there.  It’s combining the use of tilt shift lenses and telescoping mounts along with crop panning to create an even more unique and dynamic experience.  Amazing.

I don’t own a dedicate intervalometer at the moment.  I will soon.  Using my laptop with the Canon EOS software hooked up to my Canon XSi allowed me to employ the basic concept of doing time lapse.  The result is interesting, it does not really meet my artistic vision though.  The biggest issues was that the fastest interval I could accomplish was a shot every 5 seconds.  This combined with a 1-1.3 second exposure time just didn’t give me the shutter drag I really wanted.

So there will definitely be more to come on this topic.  I have a big plan in my head of exactly where I would like to go with the concept.  I’m looking forward to implementing it and sharing it with everyone.

Mission Accomplished: Tweetup

Made it out to the first triangletweetup of 2009 last night.  So many faces I haven’t seen in such a long time!

Started out with a few “pre-game” beers over at the fabulous new Tobacco Road, aka TR.  Made it over to edge office just in time for @DiMambro‘s pitch about getting a real coworking space set up in Downtown Raleigh.  All the best to him on this venture, I think it would be awesome.  I’d totally be down for getting some space one day a week in order to get out of the office once in a while.  Make it happen!

The list of tweeple I haven’t seen face to face in a while was staggering.  Great to see you @therab @mattrmiller @wiggitywack @dgtlpapercuts @ryanirelan @southpaw20 @ladyishmael @ginnyskal @waynesutton @dimambro @dtraleigh @abbyladybug @ayeshamus @jefftippet @roninvision @prachig @eronel @nematome @jreesnc @hughlh @ocell.  I know I ran into others and met some new people as well.  If you read this and I met you for the first time please let me know and I’ll add ya!

Also enjoyed the after party back over at TR with everyone that made it out.

Finally, I feel pretty good about the fact that I’m blogging and I don’t even have a photo!  Freedom!  I do have a ton of pics from the evening, just haven’t gotten them off the camera yet.  I’ll be sure to post a few soon.

Fish “Toss”!

Over the past few weeks I’ve definitely gotten into a few random encounters and activities, this was probably the most unexpected.  A new McCormick & Schmick’s is opening here in Raleigh at Crabtree Valley Mall.  I learned all about this from Ginny and Sue. M&S has a giant crab resting above the restaurant to help advertise.  It just so happens I share something in common with this crab.  Fortunately it’s not anything freaky like an exoskeleton, or a related disease, or infection.  No, we share a name, Jake.

Around a week ago Ginny and Sue made some connections and put me in touch with Dana with the PR firm running the Grand Opening event for this new restaurant.  Apparently they though that having someone with the same name as the crab was grounds for involvement in the whole ordeal.  So after a few email exchanges I was in.  In addition, Dana was nice enough to let me bring along a few friends, Abby and Kelly, to help make some memories.

The “Toss” wasn’t really much of a toss, more of a passing down a line,  but it was still cool.   The sad thing about the whole affair is that they lined up about 10 of us in our aprons in front of the place and did introductions.  “Please welcome Raleigh statesman X, Stormy!, Miss North Carolina,  NBC 17 News Anchor Page Crawford,  Executive Chef X, General Manager X, and some random dude named Jake.”  Not really embarrassing as much as flat ridiculous.  Hopefully some photos of the fish will show up, I’ll be sure to share.

Following the toss we all huddled inside near the bar where they were kind enough to provide lots of cold air conditioning, champagne, and delicious food!  We ended up sticking around for a number of hours and even ran into some other friends from the Carolina Rollergirls.  I think they may have even convinced someone we know to try out for the team!

Big thanks to my parents for blessing me with this wonderful name.  Had it not been for them we’d never have had so much random fun.

Finally, thanks to Abby for the photo to commemorate the occasion.

Cheap Books Overnight

Ever been awake late at night stuck with insomnia?  Maybe you just need a good book to read to settle the mind.  Then the age old problem of where to go to get a book late at night.  You’ve already recycled all those books on the shelves three times over.  If you are in the NC State\Hillsborough St. area of Raleigh then The Reader’s Corner is your answer.

They have a pretty substantial selection of used books lining the outside of the store.  On the left is a lot of reference material and hardbacks that will run you 25 cents a piece.  To the right is lighter reading and softcovers.  Tough call if you are trying to go to sleep.  The reference might be just the trick to put you to sleep.

I meandered through the shelves for a while today looking for any good pickups.  I love movie\book crossovers and they happened to have The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy by Robert Ludlum.  They actually had two copies of The Bourne Supremacy, each with a slightly different cover.  When I got home to break out  the first in the series, Identity, I noticed that instead of putting back one of the copies of Supremacy, I had returned Identity.  So I am now the proud owner of two copies of the same book.  I need to go back to swap out the duplicate, didn’t see much use in having two copies.

Just remember to drop your money in the drop slot before you leave.  I’m curious how many people leave exact change.  I know that I just threw in a dollar for the books I grabbed.  Total value, 20 cents.

Reader’s Corner is located at: 3201 Hillsborough St.  Raleigh, NC 27607
