Planning for the Future

future

Yesterday I posed the question “Is there a name for the concept of spending a lot of time planning for something that is not likely to happen?” and received a lot of responses.  Here they are:

Via twitter:

Via Facebook:
Don: Working for the State?
Chris: Oh! College!

It looks like the winner is college.  Not that exciting overall but I definitely got a kick out of it.  It’s by far the most response I’ve ever seen out of a tweet.  For the record the scenario that prompted this tweet from me definitely falls into the Mental Masturbation category.

  • I love that you’re blogging more. My answer was “armchair travel,” and I’ve done a lot of it in my time. And I see it as totally worthwhile and fun, even if the trip never actually happens.

I’m also a fan of virtual shopping: going to a catalog or online store, making lots of decisions about what I want, adding them to my shopping cart or dogearing the pages, then closing the browser, or throwing the catalog away.

In grad school, I decided that just because I didn’t have any money, it didn’t mean I had to forego the fun of shopping and making decisions about what I wanted!

  • then it sounds like i was the real winner. w00t! what’s my prize?

  • Retirement accounts?
