On with Photography

I haven’t made a new blog post since JULY.  I’m a total slacker.   It’s a combination of being a total slacker and not really making any time for thoughts on new topics and the like.  Something that I do spend a lot of time on these days is photography.  I do it a lot, I think about it a lot.  So potentially more posts coming that are photography related.

I wanted to write a bit about this image for one main reason.  It’s completely out of my comfort zone for photography.  Ninety-Five percent of everything I shoot is some object, in close and tight, or a “portrait”.  This is kind of landscape, kind of still-life.  Regardless, VERY happy with the shot.  I really struggle with “complex” backgrounds and finding a way to make the photo have focus.  The chairs are kind of cheating, but it worked.  Very pleased.

Post was limited to conversion to grayscale and some mild tinting of the image for a more old-timey look.  The shot was taken when I went out for a walk one morning and found these chairs in the back yard of a house on Oberlin Rd in Raleigh.  Good sunlight out helps with shadows.

Just a Photo, and a Really Simple Tip

Nothing very exciting.  Just a photo I took that I kinda liked.  I’m by no means even a mildly skilled photographer but I do enjoy taking pics in hopes that some day something magical will happen and I’ll become decent at it.  All part of my master plan to become a wildly creative genius.

I’ve done a little bit of light reading on the subject in an effort to try and understand the basics.  For me composition is what I am really working on.  In this instance I actually went back and cropped the original a bit to get something I found a bit more pleasing.

Without question the best thing I have learned is the Rule of Thirds. It certainly makes things easier to compose even for someone who doesn’t really know what they are doing.  A good tip is to check if you camera will put the 3rds overlay on your LCD display.  Makes it even easier!  Or cheat and crop after the fact.
